Ingredients
Scale
Brown Butter Base
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Brownie Layer
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1/3 cup milk
- Additional chocolate chips for topping (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9×13-inch baking pan by lining it with parchment paper or lightly greasing it to prevent sticking.
- Brown the Butter: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir continuously until the butter foams and then turns a golden brown color, releasing a nutty aroma. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool for a few minutes.
- Mix Sugars with Brown Butter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the browned butter with the granulated sugar and brown sugar. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Then add the vanilla extract and mix well.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add these dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined to avoid overmixing.
- Divide Dough: Separate the dough into two equal portions. To one half, fold in the chocolate chips to create the cookie dough base. To the other half, mix in the cocoa powder and milk until a soft brownie batter forms.
- Layer Dough: Spread the chocolate chip cookie dough evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
- Add Brownie Batter: Carefully spoon and spread the brownie batter evenly over the cookie dough layer using a spatula, smoothing the top.
- Add Toppings: Sprinkle additional chocolate chips over the brownie layer if desired, for extra chocolate flavor and a decorative finish.
- Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
- Cool: Remove from the oven and allow the brookies to cool completely in the pan before slicing and serving to ensure clean cuts and set texture.
Notes
- Be careful not to overbrown the butter; it should be golden brown with a nutty aroma, not burnt.
- Do not overmix the batter when combining dry and wet ingredients, or the brookies may become tough.
- Allow brookies to cool completely for best slicing results.
- Use parchment paper for easy removal from the pan and cleaner cuts.
- Additional chocolate chips on top are optional but add great texture and extra chocolate bursts.
