Description

A classic Swedish side dish, Hasselback Potatoes are thinly sliced russet potatoes brushed with melted butter, seasoned with salt and pepper, then baked until crispy on the outside and tender inside. These elegant, flavorful potatoes make a perfect accompaniment to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 4 russet baking potatoes (washed and dried)

Butter and Seasoning

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) to prepare for baking the potatoes.
  2. Prepare Potatoes: Place a potato on a cutting board and position a chopstick on each side to act as a slicing guide.
  3. Slice Potatoes: Using a sharp knife, slice thin, even cuts about 1/8 inch apart along the potato, stopping at the chopsticks to avoid cutting all the way through. Repeat for each potato.
  4. Butter and Season: Arrange the sliced potatoes on a baking sheet. Brush them generously with melted butter, making sure to get butter in between the slices. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper evenly.
  5. Bake and Baste: Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 60 minutes until the potatoes are crispy on the outside and tender inside. Halfway through baking, baste the potatoes with additional melted butter for extra flavor and crispiness.
  6. Serve: Remove from the oven, transfer to a serving platter, and let cool slightly. Garnish as desired and enjoy your Hasselback Potatoes.

Notes

  • Use a sharp knife and steady hands for even slices without cutting through.
  • A chopstick or wooden spoon handle on each side prevents slicing all the way through the potato.
  • Butter basting during baking enhances flavor and crispiness.
  • Add toppings like grated cheese, fresh herbs, or crispy bacon bits for added flavor.
  • These potatoes are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven but can be reheated gently.
